Scottish National Open Championships 22nd-27th June at Tollcross

Eight Lanark swimmers were part of the South Lanarkshire Swim Team which took part in the six day British Gas Scottish Open Championships at Tollcross which also doubled as the Commonwealth Games trials. The Meet attracted double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington as well as a number of European and World Champions.

Top Lanark performance came from Niall McLeod in the sixteen years and under boys 100m butterfly. Niall broke the magic minute in the heats and lowered his time even further in the final to take fourth place in a time of 59.43 seconds, a new Club Record. He also set new best ever marks in the 100m backstroke (1.07.77), 100m freestyle (57.14) and 200m freestyle (2.05.44).Maya Andrew set new personal bests in the 200m backstroke (2.35.62, a new Club mark), 50m backstroke (34.62), 100m backstroke (1.13.16),100m free (1.06.56), 200m free (2.22.19), 200m IM (2.42.34) and 100m butterfly (1.13.59). Chris Wilson recorded personal bests in his 50m backstroke (31.55) and 400m IM (5.14.51). Victoria Gourlay and Ross McCafferty reached semi-finals in the senior events, Victoria in the 50m and 100m breaststroke and Ross in the 100m backstroke. In the women's 4 x 100m medley relay Victoria swam the breaststroke leg for the South Lanarkshire Team which finished second behind a strong Edinburgh University squad. Next month Victoria is part of the 20 strong Scottish National Youth & Senior Squad which is heading to Cardiff for a six day training camp.

After the six day Championships Lanark coach Karen Kelly said "Well done to Niall. He is the first Lanark swimmer to break sixty seconds for 100m butterfly, long or short course. He enjoyed a good Championship as did Maya who broke Victoria Gourlay's 200m backstroke Club Record by two seconds."
