Scottish Senior Short Course Championships - January 2010

Nine Lanark swimmers were part of the South Lanarkshire Swimming Team which competed in the first Meet of the new decade; the Scottish Senior National Short Course Championships held at Tollcross, Glasgow venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Leading the way for the Lanark swimmers was seventeen year old Victoria Gourlay who had an excellent Meet reaching three Senior Finals in the breaststroke events. The Scottish Bronze Squad swimmer shattered her own Club Records in the 50m breaststroke (33.49), 100m breaststroke (1.11.77) and 200m breaststroke (2.35.24). Victoria finished fourth in all three finals but can be very proud of her efforts as the Scottish Title was won in the 100m and 200m breaststroke by Olympian and European Champion Hannah Miley.

Team mate Ross McCafferty was eighth in the 200m backstroke and third in the B final of the 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke. Seventeen year old Ross set new Lanark and South Lanarkshire Records in the 100m backstroke (59.33) and 200m backstroke (2.08.05). New Lanark marks were posted in the 50m backstroke (27.90) and 50m butterfly (27.41) Niall McLeod (16) making his first appearance in South Lanarkshire colours broke the Lanark record in the 100m butterfly (1.00.59) and set new personal bests in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Jack McComish set a new Club mark in the 1500m freestyle (17.36.64) and recorded personal bests in the three breaststroke events, the 400m free, 400m I.M. and 200m butterfly. Thirteen year olds Morven McNab and Maya Andrew competing in the "Seniors" for the first time also posted personal best times. Chris Wilson also represented South Lanarkshire and there were National debuts for Alyson Henderson and Lorna Gemmell. Jack McComish was part of the South Lanarkshire Boys 4 x 50m Medley Team which won the Scottish Junior Title.

A delighted Coach, Karen Kelly, speaking after the challenging three day Nationals said:
"Some of the performances of our swimmers far exceeded my expectations. Victoria gave her all in the breaststroke events, mixing it with a European Champion and GB Youth International and was rewarded with excellent times. Ross broke the magic minute in the 100m backstroke and Niall made a fine debut for South Lanarkshire. Jack went through the card setting personal bests in all his events and the young guns, Alyson, Lorna, Maya and Morven can only benefit from swimming at a Senior National Meet. The old baths at Lanark closed on the 18th December, so we were homeless leading up to the Meet. My swimmers trained (when weather permitted) throughout the two weeks at Christmas and New Year at Blantyre, sometimes at 5.30am in the morning. We also had to travel to Denny for a two hour session as well as utilising the 20m facility at Carluke. I cannot praise them enough and can only express my gratitude to Andy Figgins and Hazel Edwards at South Lanarkshire Leisure for providing the training facilities at Blantyre and Carluke."
